How it all began.....
I got pregnant with Cason in September 2002. I found out on my son, Corey’s
13th Birthday. Even though I had not planned to have any more children, we were all thrilled, especially Corey.
I had a difficult pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia, chronic high blood pressure, severe
illness, etc. the last trimester of the pregnancy was the worst. I developed polyhydramnios: excessive amniotic fluid, all
of my sonograms were showing a lack of fetal movement, and test were showing that Cason’s lungs were underdeveloped.
I had 4 amniosentisis in which over 2 liters of amniotic fluid was drained
from my stomach (very painfull and took several hours).
Since the fluid was building up as fast as they could drain it and Cason was
no longer thriving, a c-section was scheduled for 6-9-03 almost 1 month before my due date. Cason was born at 11:05 am weighing
7lbs 9.5oz and 20 ½ inches long.
I got to kiss Cason quickly on the forehead before he was whisked away to
the NICU. My little Cason had a lot of problems including: respiratory distress, failure to thrive, inability to eat without
a tube, bradicardia, sleep apnea, undescended testes, reflux, enlarged heart, large head circumfronce, jaundice, and severe
hypotonia (low-muscle tone). He was as floppy as a rag doll, so weak that he could not even open his eyes.
Cason remained in the nicu for about a month. Leaving the hospital without
my beautiful baby boy was the hardest thing I have ever done. I was told that cason was not in good condition, he still had
no dx, and he would probably only survive a few months before pneumonia set in and take his little life. Cason and I went
home for 10 days before he went into respiratory failure again and had to be air lifted to Pensacola Sacred Heart Hospital
and into the PICU.
Cason spent about 1 month at Sacred heart where he saw a lot of specialists.
We had numerous tests done including: 24 hour mri, eeg, emg, ekg, blood tests, nerve tests, ct scans, and a muscle biopsy.
All of the tests came back without a diagnosis and we were sent home.
Cason did well for about a year. Physically he was very impaired, meeting
very few mile stones. Cason was also 0% on the charts for weight. Other than that, we had no major illnesses. Then came the
crash............
